ASUS might not be the first name that comes to mind when it comes to high-performance smartphones, but their latest Zenfone 9 is right up there when it comes to mobile gaming.
The powerful new smartphone from ASUS delivers excellent performance in a relatively compact design.
Impressively, the new Zenfone 9 is actually smaller than last year’s Zenfone 8, and offers top-of-the-line specs that actually rival the latest Samsung and Xiaomi options.
ASUS Zenfone 9 Release Date
After much anticipation, ASUS finally unveiled its new Zenfone 9 phone this week – with a official release date set for July 28, 2022.
Let’s take that with a grain of salt though, as the smartphone is region-sensitive – meaning that while it’s live, it won’t necessarily be on sale in your area just yet.

ASUS launched the smartphone during its “ASUS Zenfone 9 launch event” which was streamed across multiple platforms on July 28.
The stream ran for just over an hour and showcased many of the phone’s best features – including the new camera, longer-lasting battery and processor.

As you can see from the specs above, the Zenfone 9 seems to deliver excellent gaming performance thanks to the Snapdragon Gen 8+ 1 chipset. Alongside this, an octa-core CPU and Adreno 730 GPU can also be expected.
As a modern smartphone, ASUS has also prioritized a high-performance camera here – opting for a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor (also found in the Realme GT 2 Pro, OnePlus Nord 2T and Nothing phone 1).
ASUS Zenfone 9 design
One of the biggest draws of the new ASUS Zenfone 9 is how compact it actually is. Smartphones have become increasingly larger as they become more powerful, resulting in relatively large options that can be quite cumbersome at times.
However, ASUS has taken the opportunity to design a phone that has leading performance in a much more compact shell – weighing in at 169g.

If truth be told, the ASUS Zenfone 9 is actually quite unique in terms of design features – offering two larger circular rear cameras encased in a plastic material rarely seen in today’s market.
Alongside this, users can enjoy a grippy texture finish on the phone that not only provides extra grip when using it, but also adds a scratch-resistant quality to the exterior.
The display on offer here is a 5.9-inch Samsung 120Hz AMOLED, with full HD+ resolution and HDR10+ support.
Unlike other major offerings in today’s market, the Zenfone 9 does not support a fingerprint sensor.
ASUS Zenfone 9 price
In terms of prices, you have to say that the ASUS Zenfone 9 seems to show good value for money.
It’s slightly more expensive than last year’s Zenfone 8 – but that’s to be expected with inflation.
Below is the price of the ASUS Zenfone 9 in all three variants:
- 8+128GB: $699/£699/€799
- 8+256GB: $749/€849
- 16+256GB: $799/£749/€899
As you can see, the 8+256GB variant isn’t available in the UK right now.
