Google TV prepares free live TV; here is the channel list

After first being reported almost a year ago, Google TV is now making concrete progress towards launching 50 channels worth of free, ad-supported streaming content, and we have your first look at the channel list.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see various lines of code hinting at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may send these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We will try to activate the ones that are closer to completion, to show you what they will look like in case they ship. With that in mind, read on.

With Google TV, the successor/redesign of Android TV, the company has been looking to make its platform smarter and more competitive with other smart TV options. One of the benefits of owning a Samsung Smart TV is access to Samsung TV Plus, which has over 200 channels worth of free content, supported by advertising.

In comparison, Google TV has regularly worked on its direct TV options, gaining deep integration with apps such as Pluto TV and Philo, as well as the company’s own YouTube TV. As reported last year, Google TV will expand support for live TV by including its own set of channels.

According to the text in the latest version of the Android TV launcher app, things will start with an initial set of 50 channels.

Enjoy 50 channels of live TV without having to subscribe, register or download

To be clear, these are different from other options available on Google TV today, as these integrations require you to download an app, while the new text says the channels are available “without having to […] download.” More explicitly, the launcher refers to these as “Google TV channels.”

So what should we expect to stream when Google TV gets its free, ad-supported live TV channels? Based on an in-app description, there should be a decent selection of “news, sports, movies and shows.” Fortunately, the app also includes a graphic showing over 30 of the soon-to-be-available channels.

Thanks to the JEB Decompiler, which some APK Insight teardowns take advantage of.
