A new GTA Online update tackles the ever-present problem of grief in a number of potentially impactful ways.
Launching alongside the major Criminal Enterprises update on Tuesday, July 26, the patch includes a laundry list of general gameplay changes requested by players via the GTA Online feedback site (opens in a new tab). Crucially, a few of these changes are aimed at minimizing the impact of mourners on other players, and they sound like genuinely meaningful improvements.
When the update goes live, players will no longer have to pay out money when they destroy another player’s armed personal vehicle, meaning you can finally defend against mourners with impunity in these cases.
Another big one is that your K/D ratio (kill/death) will no longer reflect kills made in Freemode “to reduce instances of grief.” Instead, those stats will only change based on what happens during competitive play. It should go a long way to counter incentivizing mourners who want to improve their K/D ratio in free mode.
That’s not all – the update also allows you to complete sales missions in private invite sessions, which again means you no longer have to worry about grieving getting in the way. “You will be able to register as a VIP, CEO or MC President in Invite Only, Crew and Friend Sessions, allowing business owners to pick up and sell at their own pace or with their friends,” reads a bit from the update. notes (opens in a new tab).
Another change that apparently gives the middle finger to mourners is a major nerf to the hideous Pegassi Oppressor Mk II hoverbike. The effectiveness of the homing missiles has been reduced, and the countermeasures will have increased cooling and fewer areas of use.
Finally, for those mourners who prefer to terrorize the racetrack, the new GTA Online update has a few welcome surprises on that front as well. The creator of the special car race will have “Ghost to First Checkpoint” and “Anti Grief Ghosting” options to ghost players who drive in the wrong direction.
The full update makes changes from everything to vehicle customization to business protection and upgrades, but it’s good to see such a large portion of it dedicated to fighting grief.
Now if only Rockstar would stop mourning their Red Dead Online players and introduce some nice updates.
