Who knew a supercar would be like that? We are definitely in a golden age of horsepower with the increase in the number of extremely fast cars. But not so long ago, if you wanted a truck with extremely high horsepower, you had to go to a niche tuner like Hennessey or Shelby for a design that suited your needs. The original Raptor, which debuted over a decade ago, began to itch for more powerful trucks, but it did not give these completely insane power figures.
When Ram TRX entered the scene, everything changed. Its 702 horsepower Hellcat V8 absolutely blew the Raptors’ measly 450 horsepower V6 out of the water. TRX has had a lot of good press and there are many fanboys out there who are now team TRX. Of course, Ford could not stand this long. After all, the brand had been at the top of the truck’s food chain for so long, so it could not give up so easily. This is how the Raptor R comes into the picture. It does not rotate with any small V6, rather it picks up with a supercharged V8 as well. It may be two years too late, but the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R is here, and it wants the crown back.
Here’s all we’ve learned about Ford’s latest addition to the Raptor family.
The new Ford F-150 Raptor R: Size means everything
Today, so many internal combustion engines are moving to smaller stroke volumes. Ford even did this as he went from the first to the second generation Raptor. The V8 found in the first iteration made room for a twin-turbocharged V6 for the second-generation Raptor for many enthusiasts. Now Ford has repented of its sins and realized that they will only be left in the dust if they do not have a brilliant V8 that can adorn the top of the Raptor series.
So that’s exactly what Ford did. The brand was looking for the most viable V8 candidate in its range, which of course was the Predator V8 found under the hood of the Shelby GT500. Fortunately, it does the job beautifully. In the Raptor R, it produces 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. Aspects of this driveline had to be adjusted to make it more accommodating for the Raptor R. This included a new compressor pulley that specializes in delivering more power off-road. This adjustment gives the Raptor more torque in low and medium range.
More power also means more air intake. Ford included a new air intake system that allows the Raptor R to take in two-thirds more air than it previously could. To give the Raptor R a larger and “responsible” presence, Ford also included a prominent hood air exhaust.
The new Ford F-150 Raptor R is still facing an uphill battle
The F-150 Raptor R is without a doubt a very convincing truck. But there is still much to prove that it must be done to be crowned as the ultimate truck. It has competitors from all angles. Of course, the closest competitor is the Ram TRX, and technically, the TRX still produces more power than the Raptor R. It provides two more horsepower and ten more pound-feet of torque. Ram has definitely not let Ford forget this, as they were quick to go to Twitter after the Raptor R was announced to proclaim that they still has the best in class V8 horsepower.
It is also the entire segment of electric trucks that is growing at a rapid pace. You have competitors like the GMC Hummer EV truck that has 1000 horsepower and a tremendous speed of 0-60 mph. The Rivian R1T has up to 835 horsepower, and it is closely priced at what we think the Raptor R can cost. Car manufacturers in the truck market are fighting to have the most powerful offer out there. This raises the question of where the Raptor R will fit.
Overall, the F-150 Raptor R looks like a very impressive truck. It gives us a soulful V8 and the power that shoots this truck into the major leagues. It takes everything that made the standard Raptor fantastic, and Ford just screwed it up a notch. Going back to the roots, the Predator V8 Raptor gives enthusiasts something to look forward to again. It has worked with the other very convincing trucks that are already either out or on the horizon. But if Ford has proven anything, it is that they know trucks. They have been in the performance car industry since the beginning. We have a good feeling that the Raptor R will be able to hold its own.
