Honda has unveiled the all-new Civic Type R as it celebrates 25 years with the brand’s iconic high-performance station wagon – and 50 years with the Civic. The new Type R has been designed to deliver the most exciting Civic Type R experience to date, and builds on a long tradition of performance cars inspired by the racing spirit.

The Honda Civic Type R, which will be available in Europe from early 2023, is already setting new standards, and recently broke the round record for front-wheel drive on the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. As part of the development, Honda engineers have refined all aspects of the new model, including design improvements that improve aerodynamic performance. Lightweight components and revisions of the powertrain have created the most responsive and powerful Type R ever.

“With the all-new Civic Type R, Honda engineers have once again delivered our goal of creating the most rewarding driving experience in the station wagon segment,” said Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe. “Through exceptional advances and the use of motorsport-derived technologies, we have transcended the capabilities of even the stripped-down, lightweight version of the previous model. It is this dedication to outstanding performance that has made the Civic Type R so popular with driving purists for 25 years. “

Powerful aerodynamic design

Developed under the model concept to create “Ultimate Sports 2.0”, the new Type R is based on an elegant and sporty silhouette of the recently unveiled Honda Civic e: HEV. To improve the sporty look and raise driving performance, the Type R is noticeably lower and wider in posture. The squat shape has been improved through wheel arches that flare out over light 19-inch matte black alloy wheels, covered with bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

During development, Honda engineers worked on the concept of creating the “Ultimate Sports Design”: the ultimate expression of a high-performance, front-engine, front-wheel drive car. The exterior design now conveys a sense of unity, with neat details on the front and rear bumpers, as well as beautifully integrated design features such as rear doors and arches, all of which are exclusively developed for the Type R and provide enhanced aerodynamic benefits.

The large lower grille on the front bumper maximizes airflow to the engine, and works in conjunction with the new, subtle hood that now has a valve to once again maximize airflow around the front.

Other design details that help maximize aerodynamics include the large openings behind the front wheels and a new, larger rear diffuser that is integrated directly into the subfloor – itself shaped to work in harmony with the body above.

The dramatic new rear spoiler design further contributes to downforce generation and has been angled backwards to suppress air resistance. Supported by new cast aluminum brackets, the rear wing sits lower but wider than the previous model, emphasizing the sleek new roofline and wider stance.

Choice of paint finish includes the historic Championship White honored by Honda Type R enthusiasts, as well as a solid Rallye Red, as well as Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Gray Pearls.

Immersive cockpit experience

The interior of the new model is dedicated to increasing the tension while driving and sharpening concentration levels. It maintains the high level of comfort, practicality and sophistication found in the all-new Civic e: HEV, enhanced by emotional, performance-focused details and features, such as the iconic classic Type R red trim.

The immersive cockpit is designed to support intense driving experiences: the driver sits lower than before, with greater visibility over the lower hood, blind spots minimized and reflective elements reduced. The lightweight sports seats with suede upholstery provide exceptional support for the driver’s posture structure to provide comfort and maneuverability on the track and during long journeys.

Drivers can seamlessly switch between performance settings, with preset modes for engine, steering, suspension and engine sound. In addition to the Comfort, Sport and + R modes, a new ‘Individual Mode’ has been introduced to enable customization of the driving experience.

The powerful Honda LogR data logger returns in a highly updated format for this generation of Type R, and now combines performance data collected by sensors in the car with a smartphone app to help drivers monitor and record a range of metrics in real time. Key features include a stopwatch to record lap times, tire friction circles that show the maximum tire power the vehicle can achieve, 3D vehicle motion display and an innovative scoring feature that helps drivers improve their skills on the track and much more to engage drivers. and encourage safe, accurate and incrementally faster laps on the track.

Performance-focused technical improvements

The Honda Civic Type R is known for its powerful, highly responsive high-speed engines. The new model builds on the award-winning foundation of its predecessor by further developing the 17YM Type-R’s famous engine to deliver the fastest, most addictive, yet safe and rewarding ride in the model’s history.

The changes are incremental with the revised turbocharger which now has a compact housing to improve the overall efficiency of the device. The turbine itself has had both blade numbers and shape optimized to increase power and improve airflow through the turbo. This has resulted in the strongest VTEC turbocharged engine in the Type R engine.

A revised, high-efficiency exhaust system works with the above to improve the power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed of the previous generation Type R and make the 2023 Civic Type R one of the most powerful per liter cars in its class.

Helping drivers feel connected to their car is an optimized version of the six-speed manual transmission that helped the previous generation love fans around the world. A revised speed matching system with automatic blip ensures perfectly coupled speed matching when shifting down through the gears, and helps to balance the car when driving into corners. The high-power gearbox has been given a lever with high rigidity and optimized gear port pattern for a safe and hyper-precise gear change.

The upgraded Brembo braking system retains the previous-generation two-piece discs for improved feel and longevity. The new car has improved temperature control and air cooling through an upgraded radiator, which ensures sustained, optimal performance during heavy use. A new triple exhaust design with improved sound modulation enhances the auditory sensation, and further strengthens the driver’s connection to the car.

The all-new Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in 2023, with first deliveries to customers starting in Europe from early 2023.
