Solstorm creates amazing northern lights over the northern United States

A solar storm hit Earth on Tuesday, bringing along stunning northern lights to the northern United States and Canada.

The storm made headlines this weekend when Dr. Tamitha Skov announced that she discovered a ‘snake-like filament’ on the sun’s surface on Friday – and it moved towards the earth’s attack zone.

Auroras were seen earlier Friday morning, just as the storm struck, filling the northern sky with stunning electric shades of purple and green.

Mike Cook, who works in space weather operations, told DailyMail.com: “There have been several CMEs [coronal mass ejections] eruptions in recent days (solar storms), but there is also a Coronal Hole (the black hole-like structures) that is the center disc. ‘

“We should see effects from that over the next 2-3 days.”

And rightly so, the cosmic show is not over – the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) shows that a G1 class is expected to affect our planet as early as Thursday and as late as Friday.

Data also show that a crack opened in the Earth’s magnetic field on Tuesday, making room for the solar winds to enter the planet’s magnetosphere – a region that shields us from harmful solar energy and cosmic particles.

Along with the weakening of the power grid and the disruption of satellite operations, NOAA warns that this type of system will greatly affect draft animals.

CMEs can emit billions of tons of coronal material, which eruptions have the potential to trigger space storms that could disrupt satellites and power grids on Earth, and can be harmful to unprotected astronauts.

Along with the weakening of the power grid and disruption of satellite operations, NOAA warns that this type of system will greatly affect migratory animals and produce northern lights from northern Michigan to Maine.

Sebastian Voltmer, an internationally acclaimed astrophotographer, told DailyMail.com in an email: ‘Internet hacking will be the least concern for anyone. GPS, radio interruptions and pressure changes in the Earth’s higher atmosphere are problematic effects.

‘Last time, a bunch of about 40 SpaceX Starlink satellites burned up due to a solar storm.’

The snake-like filament is CME, which are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona – the outermost layer of a star’s atmosphere.

Last month, astronomers noticed that a dark sunspot facing the earth had doubled in size in just a 24-hour period.

And it is now said to measure three times the size of the earth.

Called AR2993 and AR2994, the two active regions sent scientists into an overdrive to find out if the Earth should prepare for powerful solar flames – but fortunately no one was sent our way.

In early April, however, the earth barely missed a plasma ejection, associated with a sunspot group that had appeared earlier on the star.

The recent increase in activity from the sun is a result of it approaching the most active phase of its 11-year solar cycle – when it reached peak activity in 2024.
